We are running SCOM 2012 SP1 with UR2 applied. We are running into an intermittent problem with notifications not being sent via Email. We have verified that our SMTP channel is correct (it has FQDN, correct port, and using Anonymous authentication) and the Subcribers and Subscriptions look fine too.
I'm able to reproduce this problem by adding a new "Web Application Availability Monitor" which I called 'TEST Web Monitor." In the "What to Monitor" section I added a display name, and the URL (https://sdwebtest.ourdomain.net) and set the "Where to Monitor From" to use the Notifications Resource Pool (which has our two SCOM management servers included.)
For further testing, I created a new Subscriber titled "Chris Keander (TEST)" with "Always send notifications" checked and ckeander@ourdomain.net as the sole subscriber.
I then created a new Subscription called "Test Web Monitor Subscription" which is configured as follows:
Raised by any instance of a (Multi-URL Template (TEST Web Monitor) class
and of a Critical severity
Selected subscribers: Chris Keander (TEST)
Channel Type: E-Mail (SMTP)
To test, I stopped the IIS website for sdwebtest.ourdomain.net. I noticed in the SCOM Active Alerts console that there were two new critical alerts. One for "IIS 7 Web Site is unavailable" and the one for my new Web Application monitor: "Web Application Unavailable: TEST Web Monitor."
The problem is that I get the emails (as part of our SysAdmin subscription) for the IIS 7 alert, but NOT for the TEST web monitor.
I should also add that we have seen on many occassions in the Active Alerts view some "Failed to send notification using server/device" and "Failed to send notification" alerts.. which aren't always for the same subscriber.
Any idea why this is happening? I've looked over many articles, including the SC2012_OpsMgr_CompleteDocumentation.pdf but can't find any working solution.
