Ping Check or something...

Hello,

We have virtual servers at our remote locations that house about 3 to 4 servers on them. The hosts are all Microsoft and Windows 2008 R2 Core servers. Every once in a while some magic network hiccup occurs and the core servers become unable to receive anything through their firewall until they are rebooted. The same servers are fully capable of transmitting, so the agent never detects that there is a heartbeat issue, since it can transmit to the management server.

A ping check sent to a server from SCOM would expose the issue and force an alert but SCOM only sends a ping when the agent heartbeat fails, which it never does.

I would like to target all our windows servers and ping them or port check them (on TCP 139).

I have tried the 2 main ping management packs (Opslogix and the Multi-Host Management Pack), of the two I prefer the Oplogix because with that one I don't have to mess with registry settings to get it working. But it is extremely limited to only being able to ping a hand-entered (or imported csv) list of server names and IP addresses. It's not very manageable since we have a very large amount of servers.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can set something up to manage this? I would totally be willing to buy a management pack to ping (or port check) a SCOM group, if that is an option.

Thanks in advance!
