About DA in SCOM 2012

Hi All,

My customer has SCOM 2012 SP1 installed. I have to monitor the SQL servers in their environment. For this I have imported SQL management pack in SCOM server.

Currently SQL servers are monitored by Foglight. Customer wants to replicate the exact monitoring of SQL in SCOM as monitored in FogLight.

I have to create a Dashboard in SCOM as compare to Foglight. The dashboard in Foglight is like, it shows total no. of SQL databases, when clicked on SQL databases box, it showed the list of all DBs. When click on any one of the DB it drill down to the details of that DB with followings,

  • DB up since
  • Collation
  • DB version
  • How many computers are connected
  • How many sessions are open
  • How many active connections
  • SQL processes
    • Total
    • System
    • User
  • CPU usage
  • Logical reads
  • SQL Memory
    • Total
    • Buffer cache
    • Procedure cache
  • Physical reads
  • Physical writes
  • Blocked processes
  • Background processes

For this I have tried to create a Distributed Application (DA) in SCOM. Add the component asservers in Distributed Application Designer box, and added all 3 SQL servers in that. Then save this with nameCDC.

When I view a diagram view, it showed meCDC service on top & after expand showed me the Total SQL servers icon which I able to expand & able to see each SQL server.

Now in my scenario, the health is passes upto Total SQL servers icon. Means if one of the SQL server under Total SQL server has warning the Total SQL server will show in warning state. But this state not reaches towards my service name icon CDC. On top my CDC icon is showing in Healthy state even if below my Total SQL health is in Warning state.

I want to know how will able to reach Total SQL health state to CDC service on top. So my CDC icon should also has Warning state if below Total SQL has Warning.

How to set this.

Custom view is not displayed in SCOM 2012 web console

SCOM 2012 SP1, Windows Server 2012, Web Console is installed on the same server.

I've created custom folder in Monitoring and added three custom views there. I need to provide some users with access to those views using web console only. I've created new security role and explicitly assigned rights to those views, and added an user to the role.

Now the user can see only two out of three custom views in Web Console. In the same time he can see all three views in standalone SCOM console.

In particular, he can see Performance and Alerts view, but cannot see Event view. All three views are scoped to a certain manually created server group (5 servers in total).

Any ideas?

Hi

All our subscriptions and authoring groups were exported from one server to a new scom server by a 3rd party. prior to a separation project!

One strange thing is that on the new scom server any email subscriptions have retained the old "from" email address despite notification channel tab beenn setup with a new email address.

Ok if I create a new email subscription this has the correct from address (the one in notification tab)

How do I update the exported subscriptions to have the correct email address or indeed to use the one in the notification smpt channel

I believe we can monitored SQL server 2012 mirrored database using windows event id. Not sure is this possible way.

Can anyone suggest me if there is any other way to monitoring it ?

Thanks in advance

False Alerts from Switches

Hello,

I am running SCOM 2007 R2 and I am monitoring about 30 HP Procurve switches for offline/online status.  I am using the "Device Status Check" monitor from "SNMP Network Device" to send me e-mails when a switch goes down.  I have been getting alerts from switches that say they are offline, but they are not.  I can ping them and access their GUI.  Is there a way to setup the monitor to generate an alert only if the switch has been down for a certain amount of time?

Event 4756 & report "Security Sensitive Groups Changes".

Hello.
When you use the ACS (SCOM2012 sp1) encounter this problem:
In the report, "Security Sensitive Groups Changes" no information on changes to the universal group.If a local group or a global - change data is available in full.
I found the info about the event with number 4756 not correctly written to the ACS database  (table AdtServer.dvAll5).Fields PrimaryUser, ClientUser, ClientSid, ClientDomain not have value.
Can someone help fix ACS to write events to database and receive adequate 4756 in the report "Sensitive Security Groups Changes"?

Network device is not responding to SNMP

Hello All

We are monitoring our first network device (Cisco  FW) SNMP V2.

We discovered it and were able to collect performance counters for 2 hours.

After that, only thing we can collect is ICMP response. Also it keeps switching between healthy and warning state.

ASA 5525x monitor shows performance for IF-4 but not IF-7

We have a monitor setup on the new CISCO 5525X firewall.  It shows up generic under certification and not certified.

The monitor will rollup performance info for IF-4 but not for IF-5, 6 and 7.    We are wanting to look at the performance info for IF-7.

We have the performance entity of the entire monitor enabled but no performance data.

Does anybody have any ideas on why this monitor would not work?

Hello,

I am receiving the following alert on a new OpsMgr 2012 SP1 installation. Anyone have any idea how to solve the problem?:

Operational Data Reporting Failed
The alert description states: Unable to determine if watson (DW20.exe) is installed

This alert is sourced from the following event log entry on the Management Server:

Log Name: Operations Manager
Source: Operational Data Reporting
Event Number: 101
Description: Unable to determine if watson (DW20.exe) is installed

************************

Server information:

OpsMgr 2012 SP1 installed on Windows Server 2012, fully-patched

Operations Database is on a separate database server running SQL Server 2012 SP1 x64 on Windows Server 2012. OS is fully-patched

Data Warehouse, OpsMgr Reporting, and Web Console are on a third server running SQL Server 2012 SP1 x64 on Windows Server 2012. OS is fully-patched.

************************

Additional details:

I have Operational Data Reporting enabled and wish to leave it that way.

I installed .NET 3.5 on the Management Server to try and fix this issue. I now see dw20.exe present in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 and C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727. I do not see it in any of the C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) folders.

Thanks in advance!

Monitoring VMs on a Cluster with SCOM 2012

Hi All,

i have searched high and low but cannot seem to find a definitive strategy for monitoring VMs on a cluster, i have found one article that tells me to install agents on the cluster nodes and then enable proxy and then monitor all the VM's on the cluster with agentless monitoring.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212773.aspx

the problem is that i cant find any Management packs of use that support agentless and also we have over 60 servers that are clustered VMs. Do i have to use agentless management for the clustered VMs? what are the drawbacks if i use agent managed?

Many thanks for your assistance.

Unable to perform Trace functions

Hello,

Our Windows Server administrators have locked down our accesses to the file systems of the agent installations that we manage. As a result, we are getting the following error messages when attempting to perform tracing operations on them:

  • StartTracing.cmd        => Operation Status:                       183L            Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
  • StopTracing.cmd         => Operation Status:                       5L                  Access is denied.

Though we have recently been granted Write access to the%windir%\Temp\OpsMgrTrace folder, we are still getting the errors. Can someone identify the file system permissions required in order to be able to run these commands?

Thanks,

Larry

Unknown SQL Exception 5 occured. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

The description for Event ID 27745 from source Windows SharePoint Services 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

Global Service Monitoring question

Hi,    We are using GSM to monitor our sites externally (naturally) so we get some confirmation that the internet link into our company is working.    Our problem is that if the internet stops working, we cant receive an email to let us know.

How can we get around this?   With other tools like whats up gold for example, you can configure the service to text a phone number.

What can we do to solve this with GSM?

SCOM Agent HA is not working properly

$

Hi Experts,

               I'm facing some issues with SCOM Agent HA which we have configured for one of our customer in different domain. We have two Gateway servers hosted in customer domain and configured as primary & failover HA using Some powershell scripts, we have also verified the O/P of HA using the below Scripts and everything looks to be fine.

$Agents | sort | foreach {
Write-Host "";
"Agent    :: " + $_.Name;
"--Primary MS  :: " + ($_.GetPrimaryManagementServer()).ComputerName;
$failoverServers = $_.getFailoverManagementServers();
foreach ($managementServer in $failoverServers) {
"--Failover MS :: " + ($managementServer.ComputerName);
 }
}
Write-Host "";

Issue: Two days back the primary Gateway server went down due to some issue, so ideally all the SCOM agent should report thro Failover server, but in my case 35 out of 60 servers are reporting as healthy rest of them Grayed out.

T/S steps: Checked the event log for Grayed out agent and found 21016 Event

OpsMgr was unable to set up a communications channel to ********************** and there are no failover hosts. Communication will resume when **************** is available and communication from this computer is allowed.

I have tried Ping and telnet the Failover Gateway from all the Grayed out agents and getting successful result. But still donno why the agents are unabel to identify the Failover Gateway.

Request someone to get a rid on this issue.

Sundar
