SCOM errors on some SQL counters for SQL 2012 with non default port

$

We are currently running Operations Manager 2012 R2 (7.1.10226.0) and I have set up some performance views to monitor our SQL 2012 instances. I set up a view for stolen pages and CPU utilisation. Once they populated, I noticed that one of our instances was missing from these views. If I went to the standard 'All performance Data' view, the server was also missing from there for those counters but showed up for many other counters. The only thing different with the instance in question is the use of a non standard port number. The errors in the event log on the SQL server in question point to issues connecting to the database instance. There are no firewalls in play and enabling the SQL browser service didn't help. What confused me is that a lot of Performance rules for this instance are working. I have searched the web high and low but cannot find anyone reporting a similar issue

I have also noticed that the Summary dashboard shows no data for these instances for disk reads and writes, active sessions, active requests and active connections

System Center: what update rollup do I have installed?

First sorry for the title.

How does somebody determine what update rollup has been applied to the different System Center components?

Is there a tool for this?

I see the set of files that have changed with each Rollup but it does not say what folder these files are in / should be in.  The dll that was changed could be in a setup folder in its original version but in a different and proper folder for the update.

Is there something that helps determine this or is it just recollection of what has been applied?

Thanks Lance

Watcher node unavailability impacts SLA

Hi All,

I have setup availabilty monitoring for web portals and the websites are monitored synthetically from 6 differnt watcher nodes from different geographical locations.

The issue is: when my watcher node is down it adds to the unavailability of my website and SLA goes down in the related dashboard and report. Is there any work around this i.e. can we tell SCOM 2012 SP1 not to add this to the SLA calculations??

Event 31551 Health Service Modules

Hi All,

Recently I've noticed that our alerts are not popping-up live in our monitoring console.

While searching for the cause of this issue, I've stumbled against the following error (31551) on one of our management servers:

Failed to store data in the Data Warehouse. The operation will be retried.
Exception 'InvalidOperationException': The given value of type String from the data source cannot be converted to type nvarchar of the specified target column.
One or more workflows were affected by this.
Workflow name: Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.CollectAlertData
Instance name: d50ae062-fc92-45e4-8ba3-307c719892d2
Instance ID: {E52716F9-A7F5-2866-6CFE-ED6B4833FC60}
Management group: ABC

Can I link this to the issue that alerts are not popping-up live  ? How can I troubleshoot this one ?

Kind Regards,

JM

Required detail information on Health monitor counters - Availability, Configuration, Performance, Security

While displaying inventory details for one of the components like Processor, I am able to display health status

for Performance as Healthy. Same time, Availaibility,  Configuration and Security are shown as not monitored.

I would like to know the logic behind these monitors.

Question 1: What is meant by Availability, Configuration, Performance, Security monitors for hardware components?

What is the logic behind displaying status as healthy?

How I will be able to show the status as healthy for Availability, Configuration & Security,

while the Performance counter is shown as healthy.

Hardware Monitoring using SCOM 2007R2

 Hi All,

We have a requirement to monitor hardware (Dell,HP) in our SCOM 2007 R2 environment. Also we have to make sure that the hardware monitoring group should only view the hardware related alerts  and no alerts related to OS.

I believe that Hardware monitoring is based on the operating system and those OS alerts may be related to the Hardware related alerts.

I want to clarify myself is my point of stand that  can I restrict users from viewing OS related alerts when I provide access to the hardware monitoring group.

Thanks

Testing Subscription Alerts\Notifications

I have set up subscriptions to go to text messages for our On Call person, this is how they are alerted of issues to be resolved.  Is there a way to send out a TEST MESSAGE when they change the change the alert from one person to another to make sure that the alerts\notifications are actually working and getting to their phones after the switch?

Service monitor alerts not showing up for servers linked by gateway

I have a strange question in that alerts for service monitors via a gateway are not appearing in the alert view of the console. However this only seems to be an issue for servers in my DMZ domain that are linked via a gateway (using dig certs). The gateway and servers seem to be monitoring fine for reference.

I have setup a couple of custom service monitors as I would normally. A basic service, it’s not enabled and then I do an override for the one server with the service. All the alerting has been ticked and setup normally. They are setup exactly (I even printed the screens off to double check) as I would for service monitors in the normal domain.

When I stop the service (two different services on two different servers) under Windows Computer I see the status change to critical very quickly and see this reflected under Health Explorer. It just doesn’t appear in the alert console view.

I should add alerts from sealed management packs etc are showing up just in alert view from the DMZ

Microsoft Directory Synchronization Tool - FOPE (DirSyncTool) does not alert properly when down

I monitor tons of services in my environment, but for some reason the DirSyncTool does not function the same as the rest of them because it does not alert when the service is down. I have compared to all my other services and monitors for other services and it should work, but simply doesn't. What am I missing?

SCOM - DB Permissions required when installing additional management servers

$

Hi All,

I am having some serious battles with our Database team at the moment as some months after initially configuring a SCOM Management Group, we have arrived at the need to deploy some additional Management Servers.

The problem is that the install is failing and the logs point to data access issues.

Can anyone confirm if sysadmin rights are needed for additional management servers, or should it only be needed for the first MS (at the point where it creates the group)?

We currently are having problems with the team where they dont give anyone or anything sysadmin rights, so we are faced with not being able to install any more MS's

If sysadmin rights are required, can anyone point me to an official MS article that I can use as supporting evidence, specifically in relation to additional management servers.

I do have to agree that sysadmin does seem over the top to add an extra MS.

If this is NOT required, can someone point me to an article for the absolute bare miniumum db permissions needed to be able to install an additional MS where sysadmin rights are no longer granted.

I am fighting for this, but I am all for reduced permissions, where sysadmin is not necessary, as the last thing I want to do is upset our DBA's :-)

Thanks

Andrew

Monitoring Hyper-V Host virtualization

Hello everybody.Need a help to monitor performance of hyper-V hosts. Based on MSDN & technet blogs, it's not a trivial task.
I've downloaded Hyper-V MPE for SCOM from here - https://hypervmpe2012.codeplex.com
The problem is - overrided rule for Hypervisor Virtual Processor % Guest Time works excellent, but HyperVisor Logical procerros doesn't show any data.
Tried to create performance collection rule from scratch - add a rule to "Hyper-V Host" target, enabled by default (it creates 3 rules for 2008,2012,2012R2). Create a view for HyperV servers - still doesnt' work. Donno what to do more.

Sending text message alerts

We are running Ops Manager 2007 R2.  I want to be able to send an alert to cell phone.  I was told that if I wanted to use SMS messaging I would need a modem attached.  But what about sending via smtp mail.   From within outlook I can send an email to <cell number>@att.txt.net or <cell number>@vtext.com and it shows up as a text message on the phone.  I am attempting to this an email address for a subscriber.  But the alerts never get to the phone.  They are being generated since I also send them to an corporate email address.  Anyone ever have any success doing this or know an alternate way to send alerts as text messages.

I do have one rule which runs a vbs script which send an email to a cell number which is working successfully.

Thanks

SCOM 2012 - Trimming Notifications - Simple Questions

$

We are trimming our notifications on a pilot group of servers. I have successfully disabled monitoring for unneeded components but the connect to computer/heartbeat alerts are annoying. I have them tweaked so that servers can restart as needed and only send alerts if they do not come back up properly. However, when there is a valid issue with connectivity I get two emails (one for connect; one for heartbeat). I am fine with the alerts because I know the two are married (per the knowledge link on the alert) but I don't need an email for both and would like to stop that. I need to configure a the alert to not generate a notification. I have disabled alerts but not notifications.

1. How can I accomplish this?

2. What is the difference in a disable and an override?

SPN's for Named SQL Instances

$

Before I log this out with Microsoft, would anyone happen to know whether use of SPN’s on named SQL Instances is bad practice from a Kerberos perspective?

We had a SCOM issue earlier today whereby all of our local & mgmt server consoles stopped working.  We then discovred that the SQL application logs were full of this error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: 172.xx.xx.xxx]

I then put my Sherlock cap on and discovered that one of my SPN's for the SQL Service had been deregistered: The SQL Server Network Interface library successfully deregistered the Service Principal Name (SPN) [ MSSQLSvc/DC1-SCOMDB.live.co-op.local:52809 ] for the SQL Server service.

After re-registering the SPN my environment sprung back into life.

I just read some comments in a TechNet article that suggest Kerberos does not like SPN’s associated with named SQL instances, and so it falls back to NTLM.  So in summary......

We have question marks over this config:
MSSQLSVC/ServerName:InstanceName domain\account
MSSQLSVC/FQDN:InstanceName domain\account

And was wondering whether we should we be using a config similar to this instead:
MSSQLSVC/ServerName:PortNumber domain\account
MSSQLSVC/FQDN:PortNumber domain\account

Alert Generating Rules and Monitors

In OpsMgr R2, is there a way to find out which rules and monitors are alert generating and to also display the severity and priority of the alert?  Ideally, I would like to dump the data to a file which could be brought into a spreadsheet.

Thanks,
Kate

SNMP Traps

I'm trying to configure SCOM to accept all SNMP traps.  The problem I'm running into is that the device that I'm looking to monitor does not allow for probe based discovery in SCOM.  Is having the device discovered in SCOM as a "Network Device" a requirement for SCOM to be able to receive SNMP traps?  I do see the SNMP traffic coming from the device and hitting the SCOM server.
